Emergency Family Housing

Doorway to Hope provides emergency family housing to homeless families in Mercer County.   Established in 1980, Doorway to Hope was originally one of the Martin House family of companies.  As its own 501 C(3) corporation, Doorway is now a separate entity.  (Though not a part of Better Community Housing of Trenton, Doorway shares the same advisor in Father Brian McCormick, founder of Martin House, and is covered by BCH Trenton's fundraising).

The Program

Homeless families are provided with emergency shelter in a supervised apartment setting for up to 90 days.  They participate in a structured and disciplined program to improve life skills and prepare for self-sufficiency in the real world.  Included are assistance in:

  • Education in life skills and parenting skills
  • Individual and family counseling
  • Education/job training/employment counseling
  • Support with re-entry into society
  • Planning a course of action
  • Networking, advocacy, and referrals
  • Searching for permanent housing
  • Aftercare and follow-up 

Number Served

Having reached over 600 families over the years, Doorway to Hope provides accommodations for 17 families at a time.  Participants are referred by Mercer County Board of Social Services.

The Staff

The staff consists of a director, two family support coordinators, and security personnel.

The Facility

The main facility at 827 East State Street has 13 units of one- and two-bedroom apartments, the administrative offices, and a meeting room in the basement.  An additional four apartments are located across the street.

What Can You Do to Help?

Doorway to Hope receives some funding from government grants, but relies heavily on other support.  You can help by becoming a volunteer (for programs, painting, maintenance, etc.); sending a tax-deductible contribution to the address above or to BCH Trenton on our Contact/Donate page; providing household items such as linen, towels, and accessories; or donating services (printing, equipment, computer maintenance, etc.).
